In the last week, I have had been to two Baton Rouge businesses for the first time - Doe's Eat Place and Sweet Wishes Cafe. It made me realize there are so many local establishments that I haven't tried, but am always quick to go to the chains. I just want to encourage people to try the local shops!
Doe's Eat Place - Probably the best steak I have had in a long time. For those of you who have not been there, Doe's has a great atmosphere and great food. What's great is you can enjoy a world-class steak, but in a comfortable, pleasant atmosphere. For more information: http://www.doesbatonrouge.com/
Sweet Wishes Cafe - Home of the world's greatest cupcake selection...at least I think so! With an always giving attitude, you may even win a free cupcake on Twitter! Always with a variety of flavors, one of the few places you can actually order Sugar-free cupcakes also. Offering free wi-fi, it's also a great place to stop in, have a cup of coffee and post about how great the cupcakes are on Twitter all at the same time! Check it out..http://sweetwishescafe.com/
Come on Baton Rouge! Support your local establishments!

LA Boilers
For all you crawfish lovers in Baton Rouge, have you tried LA Boilers on Perkins Road? They are fantastic and have drive-thru if you wanna get it to go! I had my first couple of pounds tonight and they were delicious!!
So, hands down, I recommend them for all of your crawfish needs!
Also, while I do not eat shrimp, they had boiled shrimp available. My parents seemed to enjoy them quite a bit! Be sure and check out LA Boilers!

Not Gonna Take It Any More
On my travel blog, I did a blog about Customer Service. This is now quickly becoming a pattern for me! Speaking my mind about Customer Service! But I have discovered something quite refreshing this past week. As well, it has been enlightening.
Within the last week, I have had three miserable experiences at local establishments: 1) Starbuck's; 2) McDonald's and 3) Circle K. However, this time, instead accepting my experience as the "norm" I decided to take action and let corporate offices know about my experience. I am pleased to announce that 2 out of 3 actually responded and at least took the time to listen to my complaint.
My complalint at Starbucks really didn't have anything to do with customer service, but more poor planning for South Louisiana. We have quite a few Starbucks in Baton Rouge, but very few drive thrus. This day was pouring down rain, so I drove out of my way to go to a drive thru and not have to walk in the rain. HOWEVER, when I got to the drive thru, low and behold there was no cover for the menu. I got SOAKED trying to place the order. So, I complained. I went to http://www.starbucks.com/ and found where you can make comments about specific locations. I did and the next morning I had an immediate response to my specific complain. Not some canned reply. The representative not only agreed to address my concerns, but also tried to offered a certificate for my next visit. Now, does this mean that there will be a cover the next time I go, U don't know. I just feel better that someone listened.
McDonald's, however, was another story. Talk about poor customer service! It was a terrible experience, that was exaserbated by a poor manager on staff at the time of our visit. There was such poor customer service that we almost didn't want to ever go back. However, I made up my mind that I wasn't going to just accept this poor treatment. Once again, I went to the internet and found http://www.wearemickeyds.com/intro/ the site to the local McDonald's franchise owner. I issued my complaint. This time I received a phone call from the regional manager. Again, while I don't know what will happen to rectify the situation, he at least took the time to listen to my complaint and was willing to go back and review the video to see what we had experienced.
I think we just assume that those in corporate offices know what their customers are experiencing. I now believe that may not have any idea. It is up to us to let them know if something happens to us at their establishments. So, I am not gonna take it any more. If you are going to treat me poorly, or not consider my patronage to be important, then I am going to let those over you know. Both places actually appreciated my complaint. And I appreciated that.
So, the next time you have a bad experience, let them know! You may be suprised at the effort they will go to in order to save your business!
I have not heard back from Circle K.

Home At Last - And The Truth Comes!
Well, I finally made it home...barely. I was sick the day we were leaving and had to give me another shot so I could make it on the plane. It was a long, groggy flight home!
After I got home, I felt ok Wed night. I woke up Thursday (my birthday) and was actually getting ready to go to work when that "feeling" came back. This time it was worse than when I was in Africa.
So, I found myself at the Doctor's office later that afternoon! What a birthday present! But, I did get the answer to what had been wrong with me. It wasn't the food, or anything like that at all! It was my gallbladder! I was admitted to the hospital thursday night, and had surgery on Saturday. The surgery went well and the doctor told me that it was no wonder that I was sick. It was time for it to come out of me!
Can I tell you how good I feel now?! I hate being in hospitals, but it was definitely worth it to get to the bottom of this. What a relief to know that I wasn't infected with some weird bacteria!
All in all, I am feeling good now. I am just sorry that I got sick when I did. It put such a damper on my trip to Uganda. But I am so appreciative to have had the opportunity to go!
Thanks for all of your prayers! The Lord moved and protected us all. I am so glad I was able to get home and get this taken care of!
Merry Christmas to all of you!

DAYS 8,9,10
Day 8 - This was the last day of the conf We had tremendous services today. I spoke for about 20 minutes to he kids from Eph. 2:19-22 (we are fellowcitizens in the kingdom of God). They Lord had laid this on my heart before I left the US..that these kids need to seek what HE has for them, and not what they think will make their lives different or better (like going to the US, money, etc.). If they will allow the Lord to cause them to grow and mature into what He has for them, they can change the very face of their nation, the continent and the World. However, it all must be done by keeping their eyes on Christ and Him crucified.
Following my service, Debbie began to share her personal testimony of Salvation and how the Lord reached down and pulled her out of darkness. And from her Salvation would come that of her household. It was so powerful! When giving the altar call, she asked for the kids to come down whose parents were not saved....close to 70% of the kids came down! We can't fathom how hard it can be for these children to live in homes where the parents are not saved. many of them live in homes where witchcraft is prevalent.
Thomas had a powerful service next. After he and Shelia sang several songs, Thomas began to exhort the kids to be careful to what and who they listen to. There seemed to be a strong theme throughout camp exhorting the kids to have their own walk the Lord. When Thomas gave his altar call, hundreds of kids came down to receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. It was awesome!
Marty followed with a hard hitting message warning the kids to watch out who they listen to. Because of the influence of the west, many of the Christians over here will just listen to any and every preacher from America...thinking it is of the Lord. Marty spoke a powerful message to them pointing out that you have to listen to what these preachers are teaching and see if it is of the Lord...and don't just accept it because it is from America! Powerful!
Brother Kayanja ended the conference finishing his series on Nehemiah and rebuilding the walls. I was very impressed with the services I attended with Bro. Kayanja. He spoke the Word...and that's what these kids need.
Day 9 - I was out of commission....again. Today was the only day we had an opportunity to get out and see the area...and of course I felt bad. So, I slept all day. I love the people that I have met here, and the Ugandan's in general. however, me and their food do not get along so well!
Day 10 - This day was historical! The women's ministry headed up by Jessica Kayanja, Girl Power, hosted a day to show the heritage of the many, many tribes here in Africa. They had many of the people from each of the tribes here....but most importantly, they had all of the Kings and Chiefs present. If I remember what they said correctly, this was the first time they had ever been able to accomplish this! Remember, before Uganda had a government, this was the government and many of these tribes were at war with each other. It was quite regal.
As well, the President of Uganda attended the service and spoke. He has been the most instrumental force in changing the face of Uganda after Idi Amin. He was the one who allowed Christians to worship freely, has given women the opportunity to have positions of prominence in government, the community and in their homes. He seemed to be a very gracious and kind man.
Unfortunately, because the president was there, I was not able to take any pics of this day. I hate that! It was so colorful and beautiful! I am going to see if I can get some pics from the church!
